TBA Urges Support for Prison Reform Efforts

Based in Cleveland, Tennessee, attorney Todd Gee works in several practice areas, including criminal defense and collections. The Tennessee Bar Association is the state’s primary professional association for attorneys.

Recently, the TBA’s law journal reviewed criminal justice reform efforts in the state. Tennessee incarcerates individuals at a rate that is 10 percent higher than the rest of the country, with costs surpassing $1 billion each year. Individuals in Tennessee are also being imprisoned for much longer time periods than in other states, and growing numbers of nonviolent offenders, women, and people with mental illness are being incarcerated more frequently.

In March 2019, the state established the Criminal Justice Investment Task Force, which has since published more than 20 policy recommendations to help reform the system and prevent felons from re-offending. The TBA urges lawyers to follow the task force’s recommendations, with a view to lowering incarceration rates, keeping prison costs down, and providing alternate pathways for low-level offenders to return to society.
